misconcepts

I recently saw a video by Google’s Matt Cutts on misconceptions in the SEO industry. It’s actually a pretty good short video with lots of good information.

You can view the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=K2mv1KSktLo

But I will summarize the main takeaways for you in case you don’t feel like watching.

Cutts begins by explaining that algorithm changes and data refreshes are completely different. An algorithm change is when they weigh different SEO aspects differently whereas a data refresh just means there is different incoming data or its refreshing the data that the algorithm is using. He continues to say that a lot of people in the search engine optimization field don’t quite understand this concept. So now you should feel educated and ahead of the curve! 🙂

Cutts then debunks the conspiracy theory that Google is only making algorithm changes to make more money (short term, that is). He assures the viewers of his little YouTube video that Google is sincerely looking out for what is best for its customers. He says they do updates such as Panda and Penguin to better their search engine for those loyal long time users. He even revealed that Panda actually made Google lose a bit of revenue. He continues by saying that they continue to better themselves so they will gain long time users that will come back and use Google again and again. (So they are wanting to make money long term then, right?!)

He then goes on to spend two to three minutes talking about how search engine marketers are spending too much time on link building. Cutts suggests that there are many other SEO aspects that could be more worthwhile. He brings up using social media to get noticed by and to expand your audience. He also says to focus on the user experience of your website. Think about how you can make it easier or more engaging. He mentions that some of the most successful sites are focused on design and speed. Traffic will just naturally flow to these sites.

All in all, SEO is an all-encompassing online marketing tool that is constantly changing. In order to keep up with your competition, make your audience WANT to come to your site and participate on your social media platforms. Don’t focus on the back end link building, but look at the total marketing package.
